The Byron Clean Energy Center chapter of U.S. WIN held a Girl Scouts “Get to Know Nuclear” event

The Byron Clean Energy Center chapter of U.S. WIN held a Girl Scouts “Get to Know Nuclear” event on January 17, 2026.

Girl Scouts Explore Nuclear Science at Byron Clean Energy Center

The Byron Clean Energy Center WIN (Women in Nuclear) Chapter recently hosted an exciting and educational event for local Girl Scouts, giving them a hands‑on introduction to the world of nuclear energy. Sixteen scouts and ten troop leaders spent the day rotating through seven interactive activities designed to bring core nuclear science concepts to life.

The day began with a Nuclear 101 presentation, where participants learned the basics of how nuclear power works and why it is an important part of clean energy production. From there, the scouts dove into a series of hands-on stations coordinated by eight dedicated WIN members.

Scouts had the opportunity to:

  • Build a “candy reactor” to visualize how fuel assemblies function
  • Explore fission vs. fusion through interactive demonstrations
  • Suit up like nuclear workers, learning about protective equipment and safety protocols
  • Model radioactive decay with M&Ms, gaining a memorable understanding of half-life
  • See radiation in action using a real cloud chamber
  • Experience the inner workings of plant operations during a tour of the Control Room Simulator

Each activity was designed to make nuclear science accessible, engaging, and fun—while highlighting the importance of STEM education and careers in the energy industry.

At the end of the event, every Girl Scout proudly received her Get to Know Nuclear patch, marking both her participation and her growing understanding of the science behind clean energy.

The WIN Chapter’s commitment to outreach continues to strengthen community connections and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.
